UK Appoints Margaret Obi as Its Most Senior Black Judge

Margaret Obi, a brilliant Igbo solicitor and legal expert, has been appointed as a Judge of the High Court of England and Wales. This great achievement makes her the most senior Black judge currently serving in the United Kingdom.

Her appointment officially took effect on October 3, 2025, and has been widely reported by respected media outlets such as The Global Legal Post. Justice Obi now serves in the King’s Bench Division, one of the most prestigious divisions of the English judiciary. Remarkably, she is among only eight High Court judges in the whole of England and Wales who previously worked as solicitors before being elevated to the bench—a rare and outstanding feat.

Margaret Obi is a proud Igbo woman who has shown that the Igbo spirit of hard work, intelligence, and courage can open doors anywhere in the world. She has worked in law for more than 27 years, handling big and serious cases like murder, armed robbery, sexual assault, and terrorism. That same year, she also became the first person ever to serve as the Service Police Complaints Commissioner, where she made sure soldiers and police officers in the British army were held accountable for their actions.

After leaving her private law office in 2014, she started working as an independent legal consultant, helping international legal teams with big cases, including war crimes investigations.

One of her colleagues, Oba Nsugbe (KC), who is also a respected Nigerian lawyer in the UK, praised her for being humble and for never forgetting her roots.
